SSL Certificate is important for securing web pages that have confidential information. Some of the hosting companies provide SSL certificate along with their hosting package as a free service while others provide it on additional payment. Once the SSL certificate is available and if the website is on wordpress platform, it is to be implemented on it using any suitable methods. The cost of SSL certificates vary and the green browser bar mark with lock icon in a web browser shows the highest degree of SSL security.

There are several ways to secure wordpress pages with SSL.

Securing Some WordPress Pages with HTTPs Plug-in – download here This is one of the easiest ways to secure some of the important wordpress pages like pages for ecommerce check out, pages for accepting payments like donation and those pages containing very confidential and critical information. After activating the plug-in in wordpress, enter the SSL host name, i.e, the domain name of the website into the HTTPs menu under settings. There will be “Force SSL Exclusively” check box and clicking and enabling the box makes few pages HTTPS.

Then go to the Pages tab of the wordpress Admin panel where pages that require SSL can be selected. On clicking the Edit option, new check box “Force SSL” is seen. Check the box and click “Publish” or “Update” button. The page is now SSL secured. There will be a green sign with Lock icon next to the URL of the Google Chrome browser. Other browsers show different colors according to the type of security installed.

If the Chrome browser shows yellow or red icon it means that there is some risk in using the web page. In Firefox browser there will be warning message displayed at the top of the browser. These messages indicate that there are insecure content in the SSL enabled pages. The unsecured content may be scripts, images or social media scripts like facebook Like or Google + inserted or appearing on the secured pages. With iThemes Fix SSL/Non-SSL Links plugin, this issue can be fixed. This plug-in does not make any changes in the installed scripts or images but only changes all http:// requests to https://requests.
